Appearance

Sebastian takes on the appearance of a tall, male adult with black hair and red eyes. He typically dresses in an outfit that consists of black trousers, a tailcoat, and a vest. He has the Phantomhive Crest on his shirt cuffs and on his tie. He also sports a pocket watch with a chain, and a chained silver lapel pin bearing the Phantomhive Crest, traditionally worn by the house's head butler.

His white gloves conceal the mark of his Faustian Contract with Ciel Phantomhive on his left hand. He occasionally removes these, revealing black fingernails.[1][2]

Sebastian's demonic form has never been fully shown. Details of this form include high-heeled stiletto boots, a shower of black feathers, sharp claws, glowing fuchsia irises, slitted pupils, and longer, sharper teeth.[3][4] Prior to transforming, Sebastian says several times that his form is unpleasant to look at. Just looking at it drove Ash Landers to hysterics, screaming that he was "unclean".[5]

Personality

Sebastian is a dutiful and dedicated butler to Ciel Phantomhive. He follows each order faithfully, while always ensuring that the Phantomhive house runs smoothly. However, whenever Sebastian sees a cat, he ignores whatever Ciel says to him. As such, he is noticeably annoyed whenever they end up behind schedule. The way he responds to Ciel's demands is quite notable, as the servants are pleased when they can successfully imitate the way he says "Yes, my lord" to Ciel.[6]

Despite his ability to appear like a perfectly normal human, especially one who is able to smile, be cheerful, and be understanding, Sebastian is, in actuality, quite heartless, sadistic, and malicious. This comes out when he attacks others on Ciel's orders, such as when he kicked Grell Sutcliff's face because it was the thing that Grell wanted the least damage to. It is also shown with his cruel sarcasm and his inability to see good in much of anyone.[7] At times, Sebastian can be indifferent and deliberately delays Ciel's wellbeing, as he frequently teases him[8] and has put his life in mild danger for his own amusement.[9] Once, he responded to Ciel's kidnapping as "terrible" but only because the tea he prepared would go to waste. He also calls Ciel a "brat" who treats his workers rudely.[10] However, despite all the troubles he goes through on a daily basis, he has said that he doesn't think it's such a bad way of living.[11]

Sebastian often contemplates about the nature of human beings. He seems to find humans, in general, to be "difficult creatures," but he also states that their struggles and lofty goals make them "interesting." He is also intrigued about how insatiable they are as they are willing to "drag others down to get what they want, even in death".[

Personality

Grell, as Angelina Durless's butler, is shy, awkward, and fairly ineffective at his job, ruining even simple things like preparing tea, turning Ciel's shrub garden into human skulls, and getting lost when driving a carriage.[2][3] Furthermore, whenever he messes something up, he has a tendency to overreact and attempt to commit suicide in a fit of melodramatic humiliation.[4]

As a Shinigami, however, Grell is over-the-top and flamboyant. He is very fond of using double-entendres and incorporating plays in his speech. He often puts things in terms of theater, referring to Angelina's death as the falling of curtains on a theater act, and comparing his relationship with Sebastian to the famous play, Romeo and Juliet.[4] Grell is typically bloodthirsty and will do anything for the desired results. When Undertaker causes a cut on his face, he claims he could never forgive someone for hurting his face.

Appearance

Mey-Rin wearing her overly round glasses

Mey-Rin's square fringe style is adorned by a lacy frill and tied up high on her head. She possesses hazel eyes with extraordinary vision, and only keeps them hidden behind a pair of thick, broken glasses since Ciel sported them previously.

Mey-Rin sports on a typical maid's outfit; a blue dress, with matching buttons, and white pinafore, with ruffles around the shoulders. Additionally, she wears brown, laced-up, knee-high boots, and long, black stockings that are held up by a garter belt.

Personality

Like the other Phantomhive servants, Mey-Rin has a great deal of respect for, and a slight fear of, Sebastian Michaelis. She also seems to have a bit of a crush on Sebastian as she frequently blushes and becomes even clumsier when in his presence.[1] She is also exceedingly loyal to Ciel Phantomhive, and does her best to please the both of them.[citation needed]

Mey-Rin is exceptionally clumsy, frequently tripping, knocking things over and breaking many of the manor's things as a result. According to Sebastian, her idiocy is the problem, not her poor eyesight.[2]

However when she takes on her occupation as a sniper, that is removing her glasses and picking up a gun, Mey-Rin seems to have a complete personality flip, from clumsy and idiotic, to always being on-target, and she becomes nearly emotionless.[citation needed]

History

Mey-Rin meeting Ciel

Mey-Rin used to be, and still is an incredible sniper due to her extreme far-sightedness. She claims that she prefers not to use a scope, and in her previous job, her boss stated that being a sniper was the only way to put her far-sightedness to use. As a result, she can wield high-powered rifles, hand-guns and other firearms.[3] Once she begins working for Ciel, she seems pleased to get to wear skirts and the glasses he purchased for her, which is part of the reason why she does not buy new glasses.[4] Without them, she is able to see great distances clearly, aiding in her ability to be a sniper.

Kidnapping

Mey-Rin is first introduced and is seen trying to prepare the tea set for Ciel's dinner guest, Clause, which she knocks over and breaks, forcing Sebastian to come up with an alternate plan. Sebastian takes charge and gives orders to her and the other servants. That evening, she seems distracted by Sebastian's attention and spills the wine on the table cloth. Before the guest notices, Sebastian strips the table cloth off of the table in one move, without disturbing any of the other dinner pieces, and the evening is saved.

Jack the Ripper

Several months after the Jack the Ripper incident, Frances Midford and Elizabeth Midford pay a visit to the Phantomhive manor. While Frances, Elizabeth, Ciel, and Sebastian go out to the forest, Baldroy, Mey-Rin, and Finnian prepare a surprise birthday party for Ciel, including baking their own cake and using flowers that they took from the garden to decorate the manor.

Curry Contest

Baldroy, Finnian, and Mey-Rin are brought to the London manor with Ciel, Sebastian, and Tanaka when Ciel investigates some Anglo-Indian attacks because Sebastian does not trust those three to not burn the mansion down without Sebastian available to watch over them.

When Agni and Prince Soma come to stay with Ciel, Mey-Rin goes to get the dishes down, but since they are very heavy and are high up in the cabinet, she almost falls off of the chair. Agni catches her and the dishes, and suggests that she take them down one at time, so as to not hurt herself. Flattered by the attention, she agrees.

When Ciel decides that Sebastian will represent his company at the curry competition, Baldroy, Mey-Rin, and Finnian aid Soma in taste-testing curries. They are also seen at the competition, presumably as a treat from Ciel, and praise Sebastian for his win afterward.

The following day, when they learn that the Scotland Yard will be paying them a visit, Sebastian orders Mey-Rin to polish the banister. Due to her poor eyesight, she mistakes the shoe polish for the wax, and Agni goes to help her clean it up.

Noah's Ark Circus

Mey-Rin as a sniper.

When the first-tier circus members, except for Snake, Joker, and Doll, invade the Phantomhive manor, Baldroy, Finnian, and Mey-Rin go on the offensive. When Wendy and Peter move in to slice Finnian in half, she kills Wendy with a single shot.[5]

Peter, taking note of the sniper, runs to the western rooftop to take her out. However, due to her exceptional skill in using rifles, he realizes he is outmatched. When he attempts to flee, she shoots him from behind with a shot powerful enough to send him through a window into the Phantomhive manor, killing him in the process. The sound of the window breaking wakes a sleeping Elizabeth, but Tanaka reassures her that the sound only came from her dreams, further demonstrating the servants' abilities.[6]

She also helps prevent Beast and Dagger from getting very far into the manor by shooting through windows at them, helping to prevent and control their movements. Baldroy aids in this, by informing her of where they seemed to be heading.[7] As a result, she and Finnian are able to chase Beast and Dagger down into the kitchen, where Baldroy ultimately eliminates them both.

Later, when Ciel and Sebastian return to the manor, Mey-Rin, Finnian, and Baldroy are reprimanded for destroying much of the mansion in eliminating the first-tier circus members. They are set to work, cleaning up the mess. When Nina Hopkins arrives, she greets Mey-Rin warmly, grabbing her breasts and legs, causing Mey-Rin to blush. Mey-Rin then leads Nina to Ciel, upon Nina's request.[8]

Phantomhive Manor Murder Case

When Charles Grey and Charles Phipps arrive at the manor, Grey immediately begins to attack Baldroy and Mey-Rin. They work together to block him, with Mey-Rin using her hidden guns to attack. However, Grey is exceptionally fast, and rushes past her, cutting the guns with his sword. He then moves to slash her with the sword, but Baldroy intervenes, prompting Grey to stomp on her chest instead. Sebastian's aid is eventually required, and he prevents Grey from further attacking Baldroy and Mey-Rin. After the fight is over, Phipps assists Mey-Rin by helping her stand up and returning her eyeglasses to her. Later, Grey and Phipps tell Ciel and Sebastian that the fight was done merely to see how good the Phantomhive defenses are.

From the Charles' visit, Ciel agrees to host a party. Mey-Rin, along with the other servants, are responsible for the preparations and cleaning up of the party. After the festivities, the guest of honor, Georg von Siemens, requests attention. She and Sebastian go to his room to see what he wants and when they arrive, a loud scream comes from his room that attracts the attention of the other guests. Inside, they find that Georg has been killed. When asked for their alibis, the servants say that they were cleaning together. While sleeping after the party, Sebastian wakes her up. He gives her an owl with a letter and tells her to release it at dawn. The next morning, when Sebastian is found dead, she and Finnian try to console Ciel, while she is also crying. In his anger, he slaps her. When Finnian yells at the guest for discussing Sebastian’s death in front of Ciel, she apologizes for him. Tanaka, who Ciel appoints as his butler, gives the servants their jobs and sends them on their way. Later, Mr. Wordsmith tries to put the three deaths in order. The servants say that Sebastian talked to them all the night of his murder, and prove he was the last to be killed.

Everyone’s luggage is checked for the key to Ciel’s room. The women’s luggage are checked by another woman, so Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao check Irene Diaz’s. While searching, she finds out that Irene is much older than she looks. She begins cleaning up after Ran-Mao and finds a bottle with red liquid in it. She recalls that Phelps was found with two puncture wounds in his neck, and begins thinking that Irene is a vampire. But before she can finish the thought, Ran-Mao begins playing with Irene’s clothes and goes to stop her.

The key is still not found after all the luggage is checked, and Lau comments that Sebastian might have thrown it out the window. Finnian decides that he will look outside for it, and Mey-Rin decides to go with him. Baldroy follows them to try to get them back inside, but they refuse. Finnian begins crying, and Mey-Rin joins him. Baldroy reminds them of their job to protect the manor and Ciel. Tanaka then appears with umbrellas for them and tells them that they do not have enough food. They all go to the kitchen and begin planning how to deal with the lack of food. Jeremy Rathbone then shows up, and the servants capture and tie him up. They bring him to Ciel. When he is freed, he asks that the bodies are placed in separate rooms, which the servants leave to do. Finnian says he thinks they can trust him, but Baldroy and Mey-Rin tell him that he will get hurt if he trust to easily.

Later, the servants are trying to figure out what to serve since they are out of meat. Jeremy comes in, and helps them prepare dinner out of the few ingredients and herbs they have. Mey-Rin then remembers the red liquid that Irene had and tells Jeremy about it. He says he thinks he knows what it is and will tell them later that night. After the supper, the servants watch as everyone complements the food.

When everyone is waiting to see who Phelps killer was, the servants all stand around Ciel with makeshift weapons to protect him. After Jeremy revels who the killer is, Finnian brings up Irene Diaz’s red vial. Mey-Rin yells at him, but Jeremy explains anyway. His explanation leaves the servants exasperated.

Mey-Rin goes to Sebastian’s funeral with Ciel and the other servants. After Sebastian rings a bell to show he is alive and is unburied, the servants and Elizabeth jump on and hug him while crying.

Ship Voyage

The servents see Ciel, Sebastian, and Snake off.

Sebastian informs the servants that there will be a new servant. Snake's snakes then enter the room and cause Mey-Rin to run from them. Snake begins naming all of his snakes, while Mey-Rin nervously looks at them.[9]

Mey-Rin goes with to see Ciel, Sebastian, and Snake off as they board the Campania. Sebastian leaves them with the order to do their jobs properly. Ronald Knox then appears and asks her for direction. After she tells him, he offers to treat her to tea later, but she declines and says that it’s her first time being hit on.[10]

Houndsworth

As a treat from Ciel, the servants go with Sebastian and Ciel to the village of Houndsworth. There, they uncover the mystery of the devil dog, which initially appears to be manufactured by Henry Barrymore, who uses it as a cruel method to maintain control over the village. When Henry takes the devil dog legend to the point that he murders James, Mey-Rin and the other members of the Phantomhive household go to prevent Henry and the villagers from killing James' dog. Henry turns on them and sics dogs on them, but Sebastian stops them. Ciel and Sebastian then explain how Henry manufactured the legend, and the villagers jail him instead. That night, Mey-Rin goes to check on Henry and finds his jail cell with a large hole in the wall and covered in blood.

The Phantomhive household continues to investigate, and finds that Henry has been killed. The following day, Mey-Rin, Baldroy, Tanaka, and Finnian go out to look for Angela, who went to pick some herbs. While searching for her, they find a strange, nude man. The villagers then arrive and explain how they intend to get the devil dog's forgiveness. When Mey-Rin, Baldroy, Finnian, and Tanaka turn back to the nude man, they find a large dog in his place. When Finnian recognizes Angela's clothes in his claws, he goes in to attack. However, he proves no match for him and Sebastian is forced to save the day. Angela then arrives and explains that the real dog is Pluto. She asks Ciel if he can go home with them, which he agrees to do.

When they return to the manor, Mey-Rin, along with the other servants, tries to take a picture of Sebastian for Ciel, a job they are pleased to get, but one they ultimately fail at.

Conspiracy and Revenge

Mey-Rin prepares to take out Pluto.

After Ciel takes Lau down, and before the London fire, Elizabeth comes to the manor, and Ciel and Sebastian distract her while the servants take out a barrage of gunmen, using the skills they learned from before joining the Phantomhive household.

When Ash takes control of Pluto from the Phantomhive manor, forcing him to set fire to most of London, the servants attempt to stop him without killing him. However, Ciel views him as being too large a threat to leave alone, and orders them to take him down, which they agree to do.

They end up being successful, but are shown collapsed on the ground afterward. However, Sebastian comments that they were all still breathing.[11]

Appearance

Baldroy is an American[1] with dirty blond hair and blue-grey eyes. He's almost always seen with a cigarette dangling out of his mouth, goggles hanging loosely around his neck and wearing a typical chef's outfit, including a long apron.

Personality

Like the other Phantomhive servants, he has a great deal of respect, and a bit of fear, for Sebastian Michaelis. He is also exceedingly loyal to Ciel, and does his best to please both.

He is always excited about being able to help, and works hard to attempt to be of use, typically with disastrous results. He usually cooks with a flamethrower or blowtorch, which usually results in some form of explosion. Sebastian states that he is an idiot, whose cooking results are 80 percent charcoal and 20 percent broken dishes.[2]

When Ciel and Sebastian are not around, he seems to be in charge of the other servants to a certain degree, such as when he issued orders for the attack against the first-tier circus members.

Bardroy is not used to the slow pace of the Phantomhive Manor. He cooks with blowtorches and like because he's used to having all his food ready quickly, like when he was in the war before Sebastian found him.

History

Baldroy as a soldier.

Not much is known about his past, other than he is an American who was involved in war.[3] In the anime, this information is expanded to include that he was a sergeant in an army, and was shown to have exceptional planning, foresight and fighting skills. After a particularly bad fight, where he was the only survivor, Sebastian approached him and offered him a job at the Phantomhive manor.[4]

Baldroy meeting Sebastian in the manga

As a result of these experiences, he tends to keep high-powered weapons on hand and puts things in terms of war, such as when he called mice "the enemy," the manor "the battlefield," and the hunt to catch them "a fight."[5] Like the others, he is recruited by Sebastian, but it is unknown precisely why he chose to go work for Ciel Phantomhive.

Kidnapping

Baldroy burns dinner.

Baldroy is first introduced trying to prepare a meal for Ciel's dinner guest, which he badly burns, forcing Sebastian to come up with an alternate plan. When given a specific task and carefully lead by Sebastian, he is able to be of use and salvage the dinner that evening.

Jack the Ripper

Several months after the Jack the Ripper incident, Frances Midford and Elizabeth Midford pay a visit to the Phantomhive manor. While Frances, Elizabeth, Ciel and Sebastian go out to the forest, Baldroy, Mey-Rin and Finnian prepare a surprise birthday party for Ciel, including baking their own cake and using flowers that they took from the garden to decorate the manor.

Curry Contest

Baldroy, Finnian and Mey-Rin are brought to the London manor with Ciel, Sebastian and Tanaka when Ciel investigates some Anglo-Indian attacks because Sebastian doesn't trust those three to not burn the mansion down without Sebastian available to watch over them.

When Agni and Prince Soma come to stay with Ciel, Baldroy aims to help prepare a meal. However, Sebastian takes over, and gives the task of preparing dinner to Agni instead, much to Baldroy's dismay. He sits down on a stool and complains about losing his job. Agni, taking notice of this, finds a task that Baldroy can be useful at, and allows him to help prepare the dinner. Baldroy is elated by this, particularly when Agni calls him the "chef supervisor."

When Ciel decides that Sebastian will represent his company at the curry competition, Baldroy, Mey-Rin, and Finnian aid Soma in taste-testing curries. They are also seen at the competition, presumably as a treat from Ciel, and praise Sebastian for his win afterward.

The following day, when they learn that the Scotland Yard will be paying them a visit, Sebastian orders Baldroy to prepare the evening meal. When it takes too long, he bring out a flamethrower to speed up the process. Agni goes to check on him and tells him things will taste better if cooked slowly. Cheered up, he assures Agni he can clean things up and try again.

Noah's Ark Circus

Baldroy reveals a hidden machine gun to Beast and Dagger.

When the first-tier circus members, except for Snake, Joker and Doll, invade the Phantomhive manor, Baldroy, Finnian and Mey-Rin go on the offensive. Baldroy first encounters Beast and Dagger, who instantly attack. Baldroy avoids the attacks, blocking them with a frying pan, and sends Finnian after them and calls Mey-Rin to inform her of the invaders' whereabouts.

Beast and Dagger try to retreat, but mistakenly encounter Baldroy in the kitchen instead. Baldroy reveals a hidden machine gun and starts it up. Dagger dives on Beast, using his body as a shield, and dies fairly quickly from Baldroy's attack. When Beast moves in to attack him, Finnian creates a hole in the wall, which Baldroy uses to escape from the kitchen. He then lights a match and points out to Beast that there is a lot of flour in the air in the kitchen because of the use of the machine gun. He discusses a past explosion of a flour mill, which killed 18 people. Thus, when there's a lot of flour in the air, he can use it as his weapon, like makeshift exploding gas. He throws the match into the kitchen, and Beast is presumably killed in the resulting explosion.

Later, when Ciel and Sebastian return to the manor, Mey-Rin, Finnian and Baldroy are reprimanded for destroying much of the mansion in eliminating the first-tier circus members. They are set to work, cleaning up the mess. When Nina Hopkins arrives, Baldroy and Finnian go to greet her, but are blatantly ignored, much to their annoyance.

Phantomhive Manor Murder Case

When Charles Grey and Charles Phipps arrive at the manor, Grey immediately begins to attack Baldroy and Mey-Rin. They work together to block him, with Baldroy using a kitchen knife to counter Grey's sword. However, Sebastian's aid is eventually required, and he prevents Grey from further attacking Bardroy and Mey-Rin. Later, Grey and Phipps tell Ciel and Sebastian that the fight was done merely to see how good the Phantomhive defenses are.

Ciel, upon their requests, agrees to throw a party, which Baldroy and the other servants help in making preparations for, attending to, and cleaning up.

When Georg von Siemens is found dead, Baldroy points out that they should move the body to the cellar so it doesn’t rot. He and Finnian move his body. When asked for their alibis, all the servants say that they were cleaning together. So, Ciel is the only one without an alibi, and he is taken as a prisoner of some sort. Later that same night, while sleeping after the party, Sebastian wakes Baldroy up. He then gives Baldroy instructions for the next day. The following morning, when Sebastian is found dead, he stops Ciel from slapping the body repeatedly. Tanaka, who Ciel appoints as his butler, gives the servants their jobs and sends them on their way. Later, Mr. Wordsmith tries to put the three deaths in order. The servants say that Sebastian talked to them all the night of his murder, and prove he was the last to be killed.

Ciel is asked to lead a group to see the bodies so Arthur, but he asks Finnian and Baldroy to guide them in the bottom floor. He helps search Sebastian’s body and briefly comforts Finnian after he yells at Arthur. The group then goes to search Sebastian’s bed room. They then begin discussing Sebastian’s past, and he says that none of the servants really know anything about him. Same goes for Sebastian's master.

The key is still not found after all the luggage is checked, and Lau comments that Sebastian might have thrown it out the window. Finnian and Mey-Rin run outside to look for it, and he goes after them to try to get them to go back inside. When they begin crying, he reminds them of their job to protect the manor and Ciel. Tanaka then appears with umbrellas for them and tells them that they do not have enough food. They all go to the kitchen and begin planning how to deal with the lack of food. Jeremy Rathbone then shows up, and the servants capture and tie him up. They bring him to Ciel, and when Baldroy shows Sebastian’s owl when asked to. When Jeremy is freed, he asks that the bodies are placed in separate rooms, which the servants leave to do. They discuss Jeremy on their way to the cellar. Finnian says he thinks they can trust him, but Baldroy and Mey-Rin tell him that he will get hurt if he trust to easily. Baldroy then comes back to tell Ciel that they finished moving the bodies.

Later, the servants are trying to figure out what to serve since they are out of meat. Jeremy comes in, and helps them prepare dinner out of the few ingredients and herbs they have. After the supper, the servants watch as everyone complements the food.

When everyone is waiting to see who Phelps killer was, the servants all stand around Ciel with makeshift weapons to protect him. After Jeremy revels who the killer is, Finnian brings up Irene Diaz’s red vial, which Jeremy explains. His explanation leaves the servants exasperated.

At Sebastian’s funeral, Baldroy is one of the ones who caries his coffin. After being buried, Sebastian rings the bell that shows he is still alive and Baldroy helps dig him up. When he is unburied, the servants and Elizabeth jump on and hug him. Baldroy then begins crying for the first time since Sebastian “died”.

Ship Voyage

The servents see Ciel, Sebastian, and Snake off.

Sebastian informs the servants that there will be a new servant. Snake’s snakes then enter the room and cause Baldroy to hide behind Finnian. Finnian allows one to crawl around him and calls it “friendly”, much to Baldroy’s distress. Snake begins naming all of his snakes, while Baldroy hides from them. A little later, he asks Sebastian if they should be hiring “some shady guy”, to which Sebastian responds that he is also shady.

Baldroy goes with to see Ciel, Sebastian, and Snake off as they board the Campania. Sebastian leaves them with the order to do their jobs properly.

Houndsworth

As a treat from Ciel, the servants go with Sebastian and Ciel to the village of Houndsworth. There, they uncover the mystery of the devil dog, which initially appears to be manufactured by Henry Barrymore,

Ultimately, Sebastian is forced to save the day. Angela then arrives and explains that the real dog is Pluto. She asks Ciel if he can go home with them, which he agrees to do.

When they return to the manor, Baldroy, along with the other servants, tries to take a picture of Sebastian for Ciel, a job they are pleased to receive. Ciel ends up putting himself in harm's way to get Sebastian to pause long enough for them to take the picture. However, when Baldroy and Finnian go to develop it, Pluto destroys the pictures.

Conspiracy and Revenge

Baldroy prepares to take out Pluto.

After Ciel takes Lau down, and before the London fire, Elizabeth comes to the manor, and Ciel and Sebastian distract her long enough for the servants take out a barrage of gunmen, using the skills they learned from before joining the Phantomhive household.

Kuroshitsuji II

Baldroy makes a reappearance in the second anime season along with Mey-Rin and Finnian. He helps along with the others in the second episode when Elizabeth is trying to find the white deer. He also goes to the costume party organized by Alois Trancy, while dressed relatively as a bird. He is seen last in the last episode along with the other Phantomhive servants trying to persuade Ciel to not leave the manor.

 Finnian

Appearance

Finnian is a young boy with large, turquoise-green eyes, and pale skin. He has short, messy, strawberry-blond hair, which he keeps clipped back with five red bobby pins, two on his right and three on his left.

Finnian usually wears a straw hat, a plain top with red piping around the collar, and plaid pants, along with black knee-high boots. It is later revealed that the reason he wears the hat around his neck is because it conceals a tattoo of "S-012,", that is engraved on him from the days when he was used as an experiment for testing injections.[citation needed]

Personality

Like the other Phantomhive servants, he has a great deal of respect, and likewise to most, he has a fear for Sebastian Michaelis. He is also exceedingly loyal to Ciel, who he views as a savior of sorts. Finnian has a naive character, prone to bursting into tears whenever he finds himself performing something immoral or disobedient.According to Sebastian, he is an idiot with a bad memory.[1] He is exceptionally strong, and has to be very careful when doing work that utilizes his strength, or he might unintentionally break or damage something. He loves being outdoors; enjoying his work very much, pleasuring Sebastian and Ciel.

History

Little is known about Finnian's past other than that he was experimented on, and that his captors killed his friends, locked him up and kept him inside. They are responsible for the tattoo on the back of his neck and the injections that are likely the cause of his super-human strength. In his confinement, he was only given a small window, through which a bird appeared to him on a frequent basis.

Finnian meeting Ciel and Sebastian

Kidnapping

Finnian is first seen preparing the lawn and garden so it will look good for Ciel's dinner guest, which he accidentally kills with herbicide, forcing Sebastian to come up with an alternate plan. By carefully following Sebastian's orders, they are able to salvage the evening.

When Agni and Prince Soma come to stay with Ciel, Agni is given the task of cooking dinner, much to Baldroy's initial dismay. Finnian goes to the kitchen because he smells something good, and Agni asks if he will help. Finnian initially says that Sebastian won't allow him to because he's so strong, but Agni gives him the task of mashing potatoes, something that plays to his strength. Eager to be allowed to help, Finnian completes the task easily.

When Ciel decides that Sebastian will represent his company at the curry competition, Baldroy, Mey-Rin, and Finnian aid Soma in taste-testing curries. They are also seen at the competition, presumably as a treat from Ciel, and praise Sebastian for his win afterward.

The following day, when they learn that the Scotland Yard will be paying them a visit, Sebastian orders Finnian to brush the snow from the trees to make the yard look nicer. When he can't get the snow off of the top of the tree easily, he hits it and accidentally knocks it down. Agni, who is quite tall, raises Finnian on his shoulders and teaches him to be nice to all living things, including plants.

Noah's Ark Circus

When the first-tier circus members, except for Snake, Joker and Doll, invade the Phantomhive manor, Baldroy, Finnian and Mey-Rin go on the offensive. Jumbo runs into a just-awoken Finnian who tells him to come back later. Jumbo hits him in the head and leaves, thinking he killed him. However, Finnian stands up and smashes Jumbo into the wall. Jumbo is left alive long enough to yell to Peter and Wendy to escape, but Finnian smashes his head a second time, killing him.[2]

Finnian seemingly defeated by Jumbo.

Peter and Wendy then attack him, using what appears to be whips, and he throws heavy items in return. The two of them decide to string a wire between them and slice Finnian in half. Before they can do so, an unseen sniper, who is revealed to be Mey-Rin, shoots and kills Wendy with a single bullet to the head. Peter then abandons Finnian to take out Mey-Rin.[3]

Inside the manor, Finnian goes to Baldroy's aid and lifts heavy statues to throw at Beast and Dagger.[4] They flee, and eventually end up in the basement. Baldroy takes out Dagger with a machine gun, which also shoots a lot of flour into the air in the process. Finnian goes to help him again, creating a hole in the wall, and helps Baldroy out of the kitchen.[5] He then watches as Baldroy throws a lit match into the kitchen, creating a massive explosion and killing Beast.

Charles Phipps and Charles Grey arrive at the Phantomhive manor to deliver a message. On the way out, they pass by Finnian. Phipps comments that "this side is still too easy" and appears to attack Finnian. However, it is shown that he merely wanted to fix Finnian's hat, which he did by sewing a flower over the hole. This surprises Grey and Finnian thanks him, waving as they leave.

Later, Ciel throws a party, as a result of the Charles' visit, and Finnian is partially responsible for the preparations for and cleaning up of the party, along with the other servants.

When Georg von Siemens is found dead, Finnian helps Bardroy move the body to the cellar. When asked for their alibis, the servants say that they were cleaning together. When Ciel is accused of being the murderer, Finnian tries to defend, but Ciel tells him to stop. While sleeping after the party, Sebastian wakes him up. He then tells Finnian to care for the fireplaces first thing in the morning. The next morning, when Sebastian is found dead, he and Mey-Rin try to console Ciel, while he is also crying. He even gives Ciel his coat. When the other guest begin discussing how Sebastian was killed, he yells at them to stop discussing that in front of Ciel. Tanaka, who Ciel appoints as his butler, gives the servants their jobs and sends them on their way.

The following morning when Phelps is missing, everyone tries to get into the room he was staying in, but it was locked. Finnian is about to break the door down, but Charles Grey beats him to it. Later, Mr. Wordsmith tries to put the three deaths in order. The servants say that Sebastian talked to them all the night of his murder, and prove he was the last to be killed.

Ciel is asked to lead a group to see if Sebastian had the key to Ciel‘s room, but he asks Finnian and Baldroy to guide them in the bottom floor. He becomes distressed when Arthur and Ciel begin searching Sebastian’s body in the cellar. He then yells at Arthur, but is reprimanded by Ciel. The group then goes to search Sebastian’s bed room. They search through the entire room, but cannot find the key.

The key is still not found after all the luggage is checked, and Lau comments that Sebastian might have thrown it out the window. Finnian decides that he will look outside for it, and Mey-Rin decides to go with him. Ciel tries to stop them, but he yells that he wants to solve the case and runs outside with Mey-Rin. Baldroy follows them to try to get them back inside, but they refuse. Finnian recalls that everything they have is because of Sebastian and Ciel and begins crying. They bring him to Ciel, and Finnian searches Jeremy’s pocket for a ticket that proves he wasn’t the murderer. When he is freed, he asks that the bodies are placed in separate rooms, which the servants leave to do. Finnian says he thinks they can trust him, but Baldroy and Mey-Rin tell him that he will get hurt if he trusts others to easily.

After Jeremy revels who the killer is, Finnian brings up Irene Diaz’s red vial. Mey-Rin yells at him, but Jeremy explains anyway. His explanation leaves the servants exasperated.

At Sebastian’s funeral, Finnian is one of the ones who caries his coffin. After being buried, Sebastian rings the bell that shows he is still alive and Finnian begins digging him out without a shovel. When he is unburied, the servants and Elizabeth jump on and hug him while crying.

Ship Voyage

The servents see Ciel, Sebastian, and Snake off.

Sebastian informs the servants that there will be a new servant. Snake's snakes then enter the room and cause Baldroy to hide behind Finnian. Finnian allows one to crawl around him and calls it “friendly”. Snake begins naming all of his snakes, while Finnian begins talking to the snake crawling on him. Later, he is showing Snake around when Elizabeth shows up.

Finnian goes with to see Ciel, Sebastian, and Snake off as they board the Campania. Sebastian leaves them with the order to do their jobs properly.

Houndsworth

As a treat from Ciel, the servants go with Sebastian and Ciel to the village of Houndsworth. There, they uncover the mystery of the devil dog, which initially appears to be manufactured by Henry Barrymore, who uses it as a cruel method to maintain control over the village, much to Finnian's distress. When Finnian intervenes in the brutal attack on James's dog, the village, unaware of Henry's deceit, turns on the Phantomhive household. However, Sebastian comes to their aid, and Ciel and Sebastian explain to the villagers how Henry carried out his plan. With this knowledge, the villagers jail Henry, but he is later taken from his cell and killed.

Finnian crying about a dog

The following day, with the knowledge that there's a real threat out there, Finnian searches for Angela, who has gone outside, worried that she may be in danger. Baldroy, Tanaka, and Mey-Rin accompany him, and they encounter a strange, nude man. The villagers then approach them, and explain that they intend to seek the real devil dog's forgiveness. When the Phantomhive servants turn their attention back to the nude man, they find a large dog in his place. In the dog's claws is a bit of Angela's clothing, which prompts Finnian to chase after him. He attempts to take him on, but ultimately, Sebastian intervenes to tame the dog. They then find that the real dog is Pluto, and is Angela's pet. Upon her request, they take him home with them.

When they return to the manor, Finnian, along with the other servants, tries to take a picture of Sebastian for Ciel, a job they are pleased to get. After many attempts, Ciel is ultimately forced to put himself into harm's way, using Finnian as the method of endangering his own life, much to Finnian's distress. When Sebastian comes to Ciel's aid, Baldroy is able to get a photo, which Finnian and he then go to develop. However, before it develops, Pluto enters the room and sets them on fire, destroying the photo. The servants later see the photo Sebastian took of Ciel, which reveals that Ciel cares most for Sebastian. This confuses Finnian, as the photo is only supposed to transfer images of beings not of this world, and thus, he doesn't understand how Sebastian ended up in the photo.

Conspiracy and Revenge

Finnian prepares to take out Pluto.

After Ciel takes Lau down, and before the London fire, Elizabeth comes to the manor, and Ciel and Sebastian distract her while the servants take out a barrage of gunmen, using the skills they learned from before joining the Phantomhive household.[6]

When Ash takes control of Pluto from the Phantomhive manor, forcing him to set fire to most of London, the servants attempt to stop him without killing him. However, Ciel views him as being too large a threat to leave alone, and orders them to take him down, which they agree to do, despite not wanting to kill someone they view as a member of their family.[7]

They end up being successful, but are shown collapsed on the ground afterward. However, Sebastian comments that they were all still breathing but not all of Pluto's bones are in one place.[8]

Kuroshitsuji II

Finnian appears once again in the second anime season along with Mey-Rin and Baldroy and they help Elizabeth with finding the white deer during the second episode. He also comes along to the costume party hosted by Alois Trancy, while dressed as a samurai warrior. He is last seen in the last episode, where he is trying to persuade Ciel not to leave the manor along with the other Phantomhive servants.

William is a tall man with short, neatly-combed, black hair, and yellow-green eyes. He wears rectangle-shaped glasses, which have four decorative lines on each side of the frames. He is often dressed in a dark suit, tie, black gloves, and dress shoes.

Personality

William is emotionless and generally calm. In regards to his job, he is strict, follows the rules precisely, and seems extremely devoted. He does not take kindly to individuals who cause problems or create more work for him, particularly if it forces him to apologize for their actions. Nonetheless, he seems to share Ronald Knox's distaste for overtime work.[2]

He has no qualms with inflicting injuries on others, as shown when he jumps off a roof to land on Grell Sutcliff's head[3] and when he uses his Death Scythe to attack Sebastian on a few occasions.

William finds demons to be disgusting creatures, and is seen calling Sebastian Michaelis a variety of names, including "devilish fiend," "leech," "hound," and "vermin". However, it is implied that he finds other demons to be even more horrible than Sebastian.[4] Despite his hatred for demons, he is able to display an ample amount of courtesy to them if the Shinigami has wrongly inconvenienced them, as shown when he apologizes to Sebastian on Grell's behalf.[5]

An interesting trait of William's is that he seems determined to do a little work as necessary, implying he is actually lazy in nature. This can be proved by his dislike of overtime, and the fact that when he was a reaper in training, he was able to beat Grell in a fight, who had a AAA in praticals, but only had a B grade in the same subject because he knew it was the minimum needed to pass. [6]

Jack the Ripper

William comes to Grell Sutcliff's aid.

When Grell Sutcliff is on the verge of peril, William uses his Death Scythe to prevent Sebastian Michaelis from killing him.[7] He leaps down, landing on Grell's head and smashing it into the pavement, and lists off all of the rules that Grell broke. He then bows and apologizes to Sebastian for Grell's actions, and immediately afterward comments how disgusting it is that he has to do so.[8] Nonetheless, he adds that since Sebastian is bound to Ciel Phantomhive due to the contract, he is slightly better than most demons.[9]

Subsequently, William and Grell go to take their leave, when Sebastian throws Grell's Death Scythe at William's head. William is able to catch it easily with two fingers, and Sebastian cheerfully tells him that he almost forgot that. He thanks Sebastian, then grabs Grell and drags him away by his hair.[10]

Noah's Ark Circus

When Sebastian, who is now a second-tier member of the Noah's Ark Circus, displays exceptional skills in the practice tent, Dagger takes them to meet "Suit," who turns out to be William, as he is also exceptionally skilled. When William calls Sebastian a "devilish fiend" and makes mention of Shinigami and demons, everyone is initially stunned. Dagger then decides that William is joking and is a "hardcore occult fan." William, on the other hand, does not seem amused by Dagger's assessment.

Dagger then drags Ciel away to practice, and while he does so, Sebastian approaches William and brings him outside so they can talk quietly. With the way Sebastian grabs William's hand to lead him outside, Dagger decides they must have already become good friends. William reveals that he is present in preparation for a large inspection of souls in the coming days, which he calls a "special case." Sebastian offers to help, but William uses his death scythe to threaten him. Ciel then comes out and tells him that is inability to assimilate makes him even worse than Grell, and the three of them agree not to interfere with each other.

William, as Suit, lays down the rules with tent-mate Black.

Shortly afterward, Joker and Dagger reveal the room assignments, which pairs William with Sebastian, much to their mutual dismay. In the tent, William makes a line in the ground, and tells Sebastian not to cross it. That night, when Sebastian attempts to go out, William stops him, as he cannot allow a demon to move around of his own free will, especially since he assumes Sebastian intends to consume souls.

The following day, the circus has a performance and Wendy hurts her ankle. Sebastian is asked to stand in for her, and because Peter wants to stay with her, William is asked to perform the act with Sebastian. His refusal to touch a demon almost ruins the act, but Sebastian is able to salvage it by grabbing William's death scythe instead. When Sebastian attempts to go out that night, on Ciel's orders to find the real name of Father, William stops him again, reiterating that he cannot let Sebastian go around on his own.

William collects souls from Baron Kelvin's manor.

This forces Sebastian to come up with an alternate plan that will let him find the information he needs without leaving the circus's premises.

William is not seen again until after Sebastian and Ciel have gone to Baron Kelvin's manor and set it on fire. He is seen reviewing Joker's Cinematic Record and marks the judgment complete in his book. Ronald Knox arrives to help him, and while apparently disappointed by his arrival, he comments that he is glad Grell was not the one sent.

He then shares that while most of the souls they are judging have cause of death listed as being "burnt to death" the cause is actually a demon, much to Ronald's surprise. He further shares that while Sebastian does not seem to be one to feast, they cannot leave any souls behind for him to get. Both of them ready their death scythes and jump down into the fire.

Ship Voyage Arc

William's rescue after the Campania sinks.

After the Campania sinks, William is sent to help Grell and Ronald finish their work. He saves both of them, who were floating unconscious in the water, by fishing them out and throwing them into a boat. He wakes them up by stomping on their faces, complaining the whole time. When he wakes up, Grell tries to leap on William in his excitement over seeing him, but falls back into the water. When Grell gets back into the boat, he tells them both to finish working. Ronald complains about being injured, but William makes them work anyway. He adds that once they are done they will need to file a report about the "violator".[11]

Book of Doomsday

When Angela invades the Shinigami library, he initially attacks Sebastian and Grell, reprimanding Grell for letting a demon come onto Shinigami lands. However, with Angela acting in a destructive manner and with the fact that an angel also does not belong there, he reluctantly decides to aid Sebastian and Grell in taking her down. He leads the way to where she is trying to rewrite Ciel's Cinematic Record, and he warns Sebastian that if he interferes, Ciel's past could be radically altered. When Ciel is able to resist on his own, Angela goes on a rampage and returns to the human world to take out the cult. With Undertaker's help, he, Grell, and Sebastian are sent there to stop her, where he uses his death scythe to trap her against the wall and he even provides Grell with a loaner death scythe. However, he and Grell abandon the fight shortly afterward, when it is clear Angela will go to any length to take them down with her.

Conspiracy and Revenge

When London is set ablaze by Pluto, he is part of the clean-up crew, reaping the numerous souls of the dead.

Death Scythe

William's death scythe.

Pruning Pole

Appearance:

William's Death Scythe is a gardening tool that appears to be a long metal rod with one clipper on each end. It has a monotonous color. In the anime, it is two-toned, with the front half being silver and the back half being black, and it is controlled by a handle that is midway through the rod.

William and his Scythe

Abilities: It is shown that he can use his Death Scythe to attack, defend, collect souls, and activate cinematic records, like other Shinigami's Death Scythes. It also has the unique ability to extend great distances, with the farthest seen distance to be from the top of Baron Kelvin's manor's roof apparently all the way down to where Joker was dying in the basement.[12]

Possession: Unlike other Shinigami, William is rarely seen without his Death Scythe and is even seen holding it while infiltrating the circus. He uses it for a variety of purposes including as a walking stick or for adjusting his glasses, balancing on a tight rope, and making a line in dirt. He seems to be familiar and comfortable enough with its use that it comes across more like an extension of his hand

She also is seen wearing matching chokers with flowers or ribbons on them as well her ears are also pierced and wears dangling gold earrings and low heeled shoes.

Personality

Elizabeth cries when Ciel did not wear the ring that she bought for him.

Elizabeth is a strong-willed and a cheerful girl, with a fondness for cute things. Her hobby, much to Ciel's chagrin, is to make everything and everybody "cute"; this involves everything from decorating the Phantomhive manor with hearts and sparkly bunnies to putting elders in dresses.[2] She usually imposes her sense of fashion and preference upon others and doggedly refuses to take no for an answer. However, on the occasions when she goes too far and upsets someone, she feels horrible and will even cry over her mistake.[2]

Her disposition to be delightful, cute, and innocent is said to be influenced by Angelina Durless when the latter taught her that all ladies should act weak and cute in front of their lords and smile often and be surrounded by nice things.[3]

History

Ciel and Elizabeth when they were children.

Elizabeth has known Ciel since before Vincent and Rachel Phantomhive's deaths, as they are cousins. When they were young, she and Ciel frequently played together with Angelina, and she describes the Phantomhive house as being one filled with laughter at that time.[4] However, when Ciel returned after the burning of the manor, he did not smile or laugh much anymore, which is the reason why Elizabeth goes to great lengths to make him smile, although she admits she overdoes it a lot.[5]

Kidnapping

Ciel's reaction to Elizabeth's redecoration of the Phantomhive manor.

Prior to Ciel's kidnapping, Elizabeth arrives at the manor and decorates it and the staff with ribbons and other girlie accessories, much to their obvious dismay. She states that she decorated it so they could have a dance party, and asks Ciel to go get dressed in the clothes she picked out for him.[6]

Later, Ciel arrives at the ballroom in the clothes Elizabeth picked for him and she becomes elated. But then, she notice his blue ring and how he isn't wearing the ring she had prepared for him. Elizabeth refuses for him to wear it and snatches the ring out of Ciel's thumb. She disparages it while Ciel demands for it back. She cries and asks why he is so mad at her just because of the blue ring. She then throws it and the ring shatters to pieces at the impact. Ciel is about to slap her but Sebastian stops him and explains that it was a very important, one-of-a-kind, family ring.[7] Soon after, Ciel throws the remnants ring out the window, dries her tears, and dances with her. She muses how it is like a dream. Later that night, Elizabeth is depicted soundly sleeping and would be picked up the next day by her grandmother.[8]

Jack the Ripper

Elizabeth almost spots Ciel and Sebastian leaving the party.

Elizabeth is seen again at Aleister Chamber's parties, and spots Ciel in disguised as a girl. However, she does not know that it is Ciel, and merely wants to compliment the outfit he is wearing.[9] Ciel and Sebastian go to great lengths to avoid her catching them, as they know she will be able to identify Ciel once closer, regardless of his disguise. However, Ciel and Sebastian are able to get the needed information and escape without her catching them.[10]

Once Angelina Durless is murdered by Grell Sutcliff, a funeral is held for her, which Elizabeth attends. She approaches her casket, when her attention is drawn to a latecomer at the door, Ciel, who is carrying a red dress, with Sebastian behind him. He walks to her casket and places a dress the color of "passionate red" on her before wishing her to rest in peace.[11]

Several months after this, she and her mother, Frances Midford, arrive at the Phantomhive manor. She attempts to accompany Ciel during the hunting challenge, but he states that it would be too dangerous for her. However, she tells Sebastian that she relieved to see that Ciel has returned to his normal self: she was worried because Ciel was so close to Angelina. Elizabeth tells Sebastian that she doesn't want unhappy memories to befall Ciel and that is why she tenaciously tries to cheer him up with her own methods though it doesn't produce the desired effects since she often overdoes things and anger him. Sebastian assures her that young master has always kept her concerns in his mind in which she thanks.[12]

After the hunting challenge, Ciel, Frances, and Elizabeth have lunch when a bear attacks. Ciel dives on top of her, in an attempt to protect her, while Sebastian, who allows Frances to take credit, takes out the bear. They return to the manor and Frances, Elizabeth and the Phantomhive household wish him a happy thirteenth birthday. Frances tells the Phantomhive household to take care of Elizabeth and her husband in the future and Elizabeth is delighted to hear this. Afterwards, she, Finnian, Tanaka, Frances, and Ciel excitedly speculate of the snow.[13][14]

Noah's Ark Circus

She arrives at the Phantomhive manor, while Ciel and Sebastian go to Baron Kelvin's estate to investigate the Noah's Ark Circus kidnappings, and refuses to leave until she sees Ciel. That night, Dagger, Beast, Jumbo, Wendy, and Peter arrive at the manor to capture Ciel and kill any witnesses. She sleeps through most of this, but is awoken by a loud sound when Mey-Rin shoots Peter through a window. When she gets up to investigate, Tanaka tells her it was a sound in her dreams and gets her to return to bed, lest she catch a chill.

Later, Ciel and Sebastian arrive back at the manor, and Elizabeth comments that she would like them to have new clothes so they can go on a boat ride. As a result, Sebastian calls the tailor, Nina Hopkins, to come make new clothes. Elizabeth watches while Nina takes measurements of Ciel and comments that her designs are cute. However, when Sebastian insults one of Nina's designs, she kicks Ciel, Elizabeth, and Sebastian out of the room. When Ciel is called back in for another fitting, Elizabeth watches. Nina decides that the shirt he is wearing does not have the right silhouette and rips it off him. This causes him to awkwardly cover his slave mark, which she notes, and asks if he is alright. She tried to help him in a shirt, but Sebastian prevents her from doing so. When Nina decides to take nude measurements of Ciel, Sebastian is forced to cover his mark with his hand, making the tailor's job unnecessarily difficult. Prince Soma and Agni burst into the room, prompting Sebastian to cover Ciel with drapes while he dressed, to prevent Elizabeth from seeing the mark. Soma, Agni, and Elizabeth introduce themselves to each other, and Soma decides Elizabeth is his new little sister. They go to the dining hall, and Soma reveals that Ciel had recently been very sick. She comments sadly that Ciel never tells her anything, but Sebastian points out that by spending the day with her, he is more relaxed then he had been in a while. She comments that it would be nice if that was true.

Phantomhive Manor Murder Case

Elizabeth and the servants jumping onto Sebastian.

Elizabeth attends Sebastian's funeral where she calls him a liar for saying he would never leave Ciel Phantomhive's side. She and Prince Soma then hug Ciel telling him that they will be with him forever. After Sebastian reveals he is still alive, she jumps on him and hugs him with the servants. Sebastian corrects her previous statement and tells her that he doesn't tell lies.

Ship Voyage

Elizabeth shows up at Ciel’s manor and tells him that her family is planning a three week long family vacation to New York on the luxury ship Campania’s maiden voyage. She tells him her father was wondering if he could go, but Ciel abruptly stops her and tells her he can’t take that much time off of work. She tells him that her mother thinks a break would be good for him, but he insists he can’t take that much time off and he appreciates the thought. Elizabeth almost starts crying, causing Ciel to give in. He says he will go on a vacation if it is somewhere close and only for a few days. Elizabeth hugs him, saying that anywhere would be fine as long as they were together. She then leaves saying she will bring back souvenirs for him.

Ciel surprises Elizabeth by being on the Campania even though he said he couldn’t. She hugs him and her mother yells at her for having indecent behavior in public. When her brother says he does not recognize Ciel as his brother-in-law, she asks why he’s always like that. After her father hugs Ciel, she replies that she wants to also hug him, which her causes her mother to yell at both of them. Later, when they are eating, Elizabeth asks Ciel to be her escort to the dinner party, which causes Edward to glare at him.

Three days later at the party, she comments on how cute the cake is and leaves to get some for them. When she sees Ciel run off, she follows him. She startles him, causing him to point his gun at her and she asks if he is planning on shooting his fiancée. She tries to give him the cake, but he tells her it’s too dangerous and that she should go back to her mother. He then leaves her on the stairwell. She doesn’t want to be alone, so she follows him. When she catches up with him, she again asks him to eat the cake, saying she got the biggest piece for him. But when she tries to give it to him, the cake is gone. She turns around and sees a Bizarre Doll eat it and about to get her. Ciel rescues her and they see the Phoenix logo. He asks Snake to take care of Elizabeth while he deals with the Bizarre Doll, but he just points ahead to the many coffins around them. The Bizarre Dolls in the coffins then wake up and begin chasing them. They find they are surrounded by Bizarre Dolls. One is about to get Elizabeth, but Ciel shoots him in the face. They are quickly surrounded by more and Ciel tells Snake to get Elizabeth to safety on top of a stack of luggage while he holds off the Bizarre Dolls. Once Ciel joins them on top of the luggage, he and Snake begin discussing the Bizarre Dolls and Elizabeth is frightened by their conversation. The Bizarre Dolls begin destroying the crate they are on and she grabs Ciel, who says he will at least protect her. Sebastian then comes to save them and Ciel goes into a flashback. She snaps him out of it and is then helped down by Sebastian. She sticks with Ciel and Snake when Sebastian leaves to make sure her family is safe. When they need to do the Phoenix pose to continue on, she does it with Ciel and Snake. She then asks Ciel if he is okay when he becomes embarrassed because of the pose.

When water begins rushing in, she gets knocked away from Ciel and Snake. The water tight doors begin descending causing her to be trapped inside. Ciel manages to get under the door and they become trapped. When she asks why he did that, he reminds her that he promised to protect her no matter what. He decides that they’ll escape through the ducts and Snake sends one of his snakes to guide them. He tells her to take off her dress because it is to hard to get through the water with it, but she refuses saying she wants to be cute for him until the end. Ciel tries to rip her dress off and tells her that if she dies, she will never be able to wear cute clothes again and that everything is over when she dies. She apologizes and takes it off. Ciel gives her his coat and apologizes for being rough. They then enter the ducts. Sebastian is there and helps them down when they emerge. Sebastian tells them Elizabeth’s mother is safe, but she wanted to help rescue others. She replies that that sounds exactly like her. They are about to continue on when Grell and Ronald Knox burst through the ceiling. Grell attacks them and Sebastian saves her and Ciel. When she asks who Grell is, Sebastian replies that he’s a pervert and she should stay away because he’s contagious. Grell accidentally opens another hole in the wall and the water sends Ciel flying and makes him hurt his leg. Elizabeth is flying in a different direction towards the approaching Bizarre Dolls. Ciel tries to save her, but he runs out of bullets in his gun and Sebastian is busy dealing with the Shinigami. When the Bizarre Dolls are about to get her, she tells Ciel that she wanted him to think she was cute until the end.

But before she can be killed by the Bizarre Dolls, she pulls two swords from a decoration on the wall and begins

Elizabeth fighting the bizarre dolls.

killing the Bizarre Dolls. Ciel is so shocked that he doesn’t realize there are two Bizarre Dolls behind him. Elizabeth kills them and tells him while crying that she never wanted him to see her like this and that this time she will protect him. She then yells at the Bizarre Dolls that she is the daughter of the head of the British knights, Elizabeth, and the wife of the Queen’s watchdog. While she is fighting the Bizarre Dolls, she remembers the past and why she is the way she is. Once she done killing all the Bizarre Dolls in their vicinity, she tries to attack Grell. But before she can, Sebastian stops her. Once the Shinigami leave, she learns that Ciel hurt his leg and cannot walk. She offers to carry him on her back, but immediately becomes embarrassed. She asks if Ciel will still accept her as a wife, to which he begins to respond yes, but becomes embarrassed again and changes the subject. After Snake joins them again, they decide to go meet up with the Marquis at the life boats. When they get there, she hugs her brother, who notices the sword she was still carrying. When Ciel says that he will stay on the ship instead of leave on the lifeboat, she begins to say that she will stay as well. Before she can finish, Sebastian knocks her out, because it will take too much time to talk her into leaving. Ciel then leaves Elizabeth in Edward’s hands.

She is later seen still unconscious on a life boat with Snake and her brother.[15]

Easter Sunday

Elizabeth invites everyone including Nina Hopkins, Prince Soma and Agni to Ciel's mansion to celebrate Easter. Elizabeth notes that her brother Edward brought himself. Elizabeth makes everyone wear a bunny headband. When asked by Soma about what is Easter, Sebastian explains the tradition first and Elizabeth adds that it is also the time for everybody to get dressed in new clothes and hats. Soma becomes worried because he did not know that he should come wearing new clothes. Nina Hopkins, knowing that this will happen creates new clothes for everybody.

After everyone gets changed in stylish clothes, Elizabeth puts a bunny headband on Ciel and announces that they should start the Easter Egg hunt. She brings the special Easter eggs made by her father. She then takes one egg with a certain flower pattern and showed it to Ciel and tells him how nostalgic it is. Unfortunately, Ciel does not seem to think that it is nostalgic despite claiming that it is. This surprises Elizabeth, but she let it slide. Elizabeth then shows to everyone the Easter egg she made and announces that whoever finds her Easter egg will be the winner of the game. After the announcement, Elizabeth hugs Ciel and tells him that he should be the first one to find her Easter egg because he has always been the first one to find it.

Before the games begin, Charles Grey and Charles Phipps arrive. When asked by Ciel why they came, Charles Phipps tells him that they came to deliver Easter eggs from the Queen. Elizabeth praises how cute the Easter eggs made by the Queen. However, when she learns that Charles Phipps designed it, she praises him. Later on, Charles Grey and Charles Phipps decides to join the Easter Egg hunt. During Ciel's search for her Easter egg, it is revealed that Elizabeth hid her egg on one of the candle holder of a chandelier. Sebastian says that she uses her skill in order to place it on the candle holder.

After Ciel returned with her egg, Elizabeth hugs him and states that she is very happy that he got it first. She then tells him that she wishes that the egg will bring him happiness. Later on, it is revealed that Elizabeth never made her own Easter egg until that year. Elizabeth expresses her sadness because she does not know what happened to Ciel during the one month when everybody thought he died.

Shard of Hope

Paula and Elizabeth inside the carriage, before the moment where Elizabeth disappears

Instead of visiting the manor with her mother on Ciel’s birthday, she goes to the Frost Fair with her maid, Paula, and finds a gift for him – a Noah’s Ark toy. However, it turns out to not be one of the original arks built by Ciel’s Funtom Company, causing her to break it in distress. Inside, though, she finds the Shard of Hope, which is similar enough to Ciel’s family ring that she previously broke that she thinks it will make a good gift. The two of them arrive at his manor the day before his birthday, but she notices that he has his ring fixed. Taking the present back, Paula and her leave quickly. While on their way back to the Midford estate, they get stuck in traffic, when Elizabeth hears a tune that attracts her attention. She goes to investigate and encounters Drossel Keinz, who kidnaps her to make her into a doll.
Elizabeth is pleased that Ciel found the ring in his pudding
Ciel and Pluto go to rescue her, with Sebastian and Grell Sutcliff meeting up with them later. Pluto leads the four of them to the tower she is trapped in, and when they find her inside, Drossel uses puppet strings to control her body and forces her to attack Ciel. Grell cuts down the strings, and Sebastian engages in a brief battle with Drossel. While Sebastian is battling Drossel, Ciel holds her in his arms and she asks if they can have a party for his birthday, which he agrees to. At the party, she is very happy when he finds the Shard of Hope in his Christmas pudding, taking it as a sign of good things to come for him.

Conspiracy and Revenge

During a break between Fred Aberline's death and the exposition, Elizabeth shows up at the manor and conspires with the staff to make the manor filled with laughter, as it had been in the past. She then spends the day playing chess with Ciel, which she decides is a "cute" game. When they go down to dinner, the servants' wide smiles seem to amuse Ciel, much to her delight. After the London fire has been put out, she is seen in a field of blue flowers, worried about Ciel and the other members of the Phantomhive household. Paula arrives and tells her there is no news of them, which seems to sadden her further. She then makes a ring out of a blue flower to cheer her up, as the color of the flower reminds Elizabeth of the blue stone in Ciel's family ring. However, it is blown away and lands in the river, where Ciel later finds it and Sebastian puts it on him.

Kuroshitsuji II

Ciel and Elizabeth searching for the white deer.

Elizabeth makes a reappearance in the second anime season when she pesters Ciel to come along with her on a quest to find the legendary white deer. She manages to tell Ciel that she wants him to be happy forever like what the white deer supposedly gives everyone who catches sight of it. Ciel, surprised and touched, calls her Lizzy again, much to her pleasure.

She is seen devastated when Sebastian informs her that Ciel has been wiped of all the memories of the events which happened in the first anime season and she agrees to not talk much about it so as not to act unnaturally in front of him. She goes along to the costume party organized by Alois Trancy. Alois forces her to dance with him, causing her sadness and Ciel's annoyance.

Alois and Elizabeth dancing

She is last seen in the last episode where she rushes all the way to Ciel's manor as usual. She protests that his all-black clothing (at this point, Ciel has already become a demon) is not cute at all and in response, Ciel asks her to dance with him, much to her surprise. She complies happily, however. Midway the dance, she notices that Ciel's left eye is red but after a flash, it has gone back to blue.

Characteristics
Race Human
Gender Male
Height 177cm (5'10")
Eyes Dark Brown
Hair Black
Professional Status

Lau is a Chinese nobleman, and as such, dresses in Chinese clothing, including a Tangzhuang. He has a tendency to keep his hands hidden and clasped together in his overly long sleeves. He also has short, black hair. Lau is notable for the fact that he almost never opens his eyes, and the few times he has opened them from more than just slits, his eye color is shown to be a dark brown.

Personality

Lau is a generally easy-going, carefree man, with a smile almost constantly plastered on his face. However, he does have some odd tendencies. He keeps a variety of women with him, and even refers to his personal assassin, Ran-Mao, as his sister, though not related by blood.[2] Despite not being related, though, he has known Ran-Mao since they were young.[3] He apparently treats these girls well, as he takes them out for treats and special occasions.[citation needed]

He also has an odd tendency to say or act like he knows something at times, only then to reveal that he actually doesn't. This trait of his particularly annoys others around him and Sebastian describes this behavior as "typical of a yes-man."[4] However, despite his oddities, he seems completely oblivious to how strange he appears to be to others.

Lau has shown that he has a slight propensity toward violence, as he tells Ciel that he would kill Agni if he were Harold West, much to Ciel's surprise since he, on the other hand, finds that a bit excessive.[5] Also, in his zeal to help Sebastian during his magic trick, which involved stabbing a chest that Sebastian was in repeatedly, he does so without thinking of the circumstances, attacking instantly from the top. Lau actually manages to cause Sebastian's pain, which even surprised the latter.[6]

Kidnapping

Lau's first appearance is when he is playing pool with Ciel Phantomhive and a group of nobles, yet he was not properly introduced. They discuss about a traitor loose amongst them and Ciel says he would deal with that 'rat' since he received ingredients from Clause.[7] Afterwards, he does not make another appearance until the following arc.

Jack the Ripper

Lau initially appears with Angelina Durless and Grell Sutcliff at Ciel's London townhouse, looking for tea, where they discuss the recent string of murders so vicious that the killer was given the nickname "Jack the Ripper."[8]

Lau wants to go to the crime scene but does not know its location so Ciel suggests going to the funeral director, Undertaker.[9] Undertaker agrees to share information, if they can amuse him. Lau attempts to do so, but fails. After Sebastian steps in, they are able to get information, and learn that the killer was so skilled at performing the crime that it had to be someone with great medical knowledge.[10]

On the carriage ride home, Sebastian is ordered to compile a list of suspects and goes off. Ciel says that Sebastian will definitely be able to accomplish his mission and he'll have tea prepared for them as well. Lau comments that Ciel must be confident of Sebastian because since a long time ago, he has always been at the Earl's side, never leaving him like a shadow. Ciel then points out that Sebastian hasn't even served him for two years yet.[11]

They arrive back at Ciel's townhouse late because Grell traveled the wrong way. Lau and Angelina are dumbfounded to see that Sebastian has already returned home first than them with the tea and preparations finished.[12] Sebastian shows that a list of names that fits their conditions have been made and narrows it down to Aleister Chamber.[13]

That evening, they arrive at Aleister's party. Angelina and Grell attend the party as themselves, Ciel as a girl and respectively Angelina's niece from the countryside, Sebastian as Ciel's home tutor, and Lau as Angelina's lover.[14] Later, Angelina is shown enjoying herself over the luxury as Lau fans her.[15]

Eventually, Sebastian, to serve as a distraction for Ciel, pretends to be a magician and asks a "random" gentleman, Lau, to assist him of this performance.[16] Sebastian instructs Lau that after he enters the cupboard, Lau is to tightly chain it up and then pierce the cupboard with several swords. After that, Sebastian promises to come out alive and enters the cupboard.[17]

Lau helps Sebastian with his magic trick at Aleister's party.

Lau then says that he won't hold back. He chains the cupboard and immediately stabs it from the top, bewildering the audience. He then swiftly pierces the swords in every possible place. Nonetheless, Sebastian steps out, alive. Lau lightheartedly praises him, saying he thought he created a mountain of needles and yet Sebastian still manages to live. He then curiously asks what sort of trap that was while Angelina scolds him that he shoved all the swords at him without a thought.[18]

The following day, they discover that Aleister Chamber is not "Jack the Ripper". Lau muses that if the suspect could not carry out the murders, than it's an impersonator or better yet, others from the beginning responsible for Jack the Ripper.[19]

Consequently, Lau shows up at Angelina's funeral and visits Ciel by her grave. He questions Ciel about whether he revealed who the murderer was, but Ciel states there was no reason to, as the Jack the Ripper killings has stopped. Lau says that this decision will cause him to "sink into the mud," because of his refusal to seek help. Ciel retaliates by saying Lau's opium and intoxicants den, in time, will surely be closed by the police. Lau brushes this off, saying he can find a new business venture, as his interest in England and in Ciel has not yet been exhausted. They then part in separate ways.[20]

Curry Contest

Ciel and Sebastian, after learning of the Anglo-Indian attacks, go to visit Lau in his opium den to see if he knows of any Indian hideouts. There, Lau is seen relaxing with several girls. Ciel scolds him to stop smoking opium and listen and leaves the East End as Lau's responsibility as the number of people who move in and out of the street are under his management. Lau initially pretends to know of the incident, and they leave the den to walk in the East End, supposedly to find the stronghold of Indians. He then asks Ciel to explain what the incident is. Once he does, Lau comments that the reason for the interest in the case must be because of the targets have been upper-class citizens and soldiers. Lau then admits that he got lost in their conversation so it seems that he lost track of where they are at.[21]

They are then attacked and threatened by Indians and Lau hides up on a roof and watches the ensuing fight and the arrival of Prince Soma and Agni. After Agni defeats all the Indians and consequently leaves with Soma, Lau praises that those two are amazing and claims that he was hiding on a roof for the "right chance to jump in". He comments that Soma and Agni were definitely not from the East End due to their elegant apparel and accent.[22]

Afterwards, Lau returns with Ciel to the Phantomhive manor. There they encounter Agni and Prince Soma again, as the pair have decided to stay with Ciel since they saved him. Lau then also decides to stay with Ciel.[23] Soon after, they learn that Agni and Soma are looking for Meena. During the day, he joins Agni and Soma as they interrupt Ciel at whatever available opportunity.[24]

At fencing hour, Ciel challenges Soma to a match. During the match, Agni intervenes and unintentionally hurts Ciel's arm in the process. Lau tosses a sword to Sebastian, in which the latter catches. He tells Sebastian that he should take reprisal for his master. However, Agni and Sebastian are tied, to Lau's disappointment.[25][26]

The next day, another mysterious attacks occurs. Lau comments that the Soma and Agni have been suspicious from the start, but Ciel says there is no reason for them to cause trouble and if they were, they certainly would not come to live with him. They decide to wait until nighttime to investigate Soma and Agni, who seem to leave every night. Sebastian, Lau, and Ciel then follow them, and it turns out, Agni and Soma are simply looking for Meena.[27]

Afterwards, Agni leaves again on his own. Lau, Sebastian, Ciel, and Soma decide to follow Agni, as they are all unaware of his motive in going out on his own at night. They follow him to Harold West Jebb's house, who is an importer of trade goods. Lau notes that if West is an importer of goods, then they are in the same business.[28] They sneak onto his property with Sebastian lifting Ciel and jumping over the wall while Lau and Soma are forced to climb over. Lau calls them over, as he has already knocked out the guard personnel by rendering them asleep with a needle soaked with a drug, and nonchalantly states that at least they are not dead.[29]

They go inside and Lau remains hidden with Ciel while they eavesdrop, and later when Soma bursts in, he watches the ensuing fight. After observing, Lau and Ciel speculate that this has to do with the black market, so Lau concludes that this is in Ciel's jurisdiction. Sebastian goes in to rescue Soma, wearing a stuffed deer's head which amuses Lau. When he deems it too dangerous to remain there, Lau carries Ciel out and back to the Phantomhive manor. There, they speculate that Agni betrayed Soma in order to earn West the Royal Warrant, and in return, West would return Meena.[30][31][32]

Ciel decides to obtain the Royal Warrant for the Funtom Company and Lau agrees, saying that the Funtom Company launching into food industry will also deter competitors.[33] However, Soma says Agni's "Right Hand of God" will be unbeatable and claims that he has never tasted a more delicious curry than Agni's and Ciel and Lau conclude that his nickname is because of its god-like capability, not strength.[34]

Later, Lau uses his position as the head of a trading company to obtain the best spices in a short period of time. He complains that he had to prepare them all in one day, as the Earl has a rough way of using people and he's not even an expert on spices. Ciel counters that this is the only time Lau is useful, while Lau says it is never a bad time to do Ciel a favor. He then also aids in taste-testing the curry until Sebastian makes a competition-worthy one.[35][36]

Ciel, followed by Lau, comes down to the kitchen and requests that Sebastian make him chocolate cake for a dessert. Out in the hall, Lau comments that this request seems to indicate that he would like Sebastian to lose. Ciel says it would be more interesting if he did, and Lau calls him a bully.[37]

Lau watches the curry contest with Ciel and Ran-Mao.

At the competition, Lau arrives with Ran-Mao. Ciel speculates with Lau that Agni was likely promised by Harold West the return of Meena should he win so he would obviously be taking the contest seriously. Lau asks if Ciel would have killed Agni if he was West and the latter is surprised, finding that a bit excessive. Lau casually states that if it was him, he would do so, and adds that he is interested in Sebastian's strategy today.[38]

After the competition was declared tied between Agni and Sebastian, the Queen arrives to cast her own vote. When reminded of her dead husband she breaks down crying. Lau comments that the Queen seems like a complex character and Ciel admonishes him not talk like that. After she recovered, she declares Sebastian as the winner.[39] Seeing West's distress upon him losing, Lau apparently follows West and Meena to an alleyway. He states that while Ciel would let them go, he cannot let them, the "rats", infest his city. Hence, he keeps a "cat" and Ran-Mao is seen swinging her clubs and they scream. It is assumed he had West and Meena killed.[40]

Ship Voyage

Lau and Ran Mao barge in Ciel's mansion and Ciel is startled at his sudden arrival. Lau is disappointed that Ciel already finished his breakfast since he was planning to eat it. He offhandedly notes that he thought Sebastian just died recently and Ciel scolds him for not listening.[41]

Lau then reveals that he came to discuss the matter of the Karnstein Hospital that revives the dead, which was noted on the newspaper as well. He says that the matter might not be occult or preternatural. Lau informs that the hospital has been doing a lot of shopping in the back docks that he is in charge of where they buy people. They illegally shop for foreign slaves and the amounts increased lately. He doubts a hospital could fit so many people and that it is bad for a hospital like that to feature in the regular society's news. With this information, they speculate that they are executing illegal human experimentation and Ciel orders Sebastian to investigate.[42]

Lau is currently not shown since.

Houndsworth

After the Jack the Ripper killings and after Ciel's visit to Houndsworth, Lau approaches Ciel again to help him take a photo of Sebastian with a special camera that reveals what one cares about the most, which Ciel accepts. Ciel accepts his offer, and Lau then questions what Ciel needs his help with.

Lau uses Ran-Mao to distract the dinner guest by using her sexuality, but the display fails to halt Sebastian, even when he signals for Baldroy and Finnian to blow fans on her to raise her skirt more. When Ciel finally comes up with a successful plan, Lau and Ran-Mao aid by providing the lighting for the photo.

Shard of Hope

Lau and Ran-Mao attempt to aid Ciel again in obtaining the Shard of Hope ring by winning the ice sculpture contest. However, his sculpture that shows a provocative, nude Ran-Mao is not well received, except by Aleister Chamber, as it is too indecent to reveal, although he says covering it up is the only thing that makes it indecent.

Conspiracy and Revenge

Lau and Ran-Mao are initially approached by Ciel with help in the investigation of John Stanley's death. They claim not to know anything, but agree to spread a rumor that Ciel has something important from his corpse. As a result, they get caught up in a conspiracy that frames them and Ciel for the distribution of Lady Blanc opium, despite it being a problem for Lau's own opium dealings.

Lau gives away control of the East End.

The Scotland Yard tries to take them down, but Ran-Mao kills and injures them, allowing for them to escape. After a brief dealing where Lau hands control of the East End to another individual, they attempt to leave England on a boat. However, Ciel learns of their betrayal, as Lau actually had Stanley killed, and attacks the boat with Sebastian.

When they get on it, Sebastian takes down Ran-Mao, while Ciel approaches Lau, who points out the document he stole from Stanley's corpse, and Ciel questions why he was betrayed. Lau says he did so merely because it was too boring being someone else's game piece, and he wanted to play himself. He reveals a weapon, which he wields with such skill as to avoid Ciel's bullets, and charges after Ciel. They arrive on the deck, and when going after Ciel again, he is stopped by Fred Aberline, who uses his body as a human shield, and cuts him down. When he charges Ciel a second time, Sebastian stops him and fatally wounds him with his hand.

Pulling away, he admits his defeat, and asks Ran-Mao if she would continue the dream with him. They jump off the boat, only to reappear in the second episode Kuroshitsuji II. Ciel has no previous memory of them, or the events involving them, although by the end of the second season Ciel regains his memories and decided to spare Lau and Ran-Mao, he was later given a gift by Sebastian.

Appearance

Undertaker's eyes are revealed.

Undertaker is a lean man with long grey hair including a few braids throughout, which is worn so as to hide his eyes. His eyes are the typical color of Shinigami eyes, a bright yellow green. He has a noticeable scar across his face, neck, and left pinky finger and has long black fingernails. He wears all black, including an incredibly long, black top hat, and a long, grey scarf across his chest, with it knotted by his hips.

Personality

Known only by his profession, Undertaker is a mysterious man whose scarred face is never fully visible beneath his long hair and crooked top hat. He tends to punctuate his words with sweeping gestures and creepy giggles and seems to spend a good deal of time inside of coffins. Undertaker seems to take joy in frightening others, as he intentionally acts creepy to provoke a reaction. He appears to enjoy both his job as a funeral director and as an informant to the Phantomhive family, as he has worked with them since before Vincent Phantomhive's time.[1] He has great connections with the underworld, as victims of murder from the underworld often show up at his place of business. It is these connections that allow him to be a useful informant to the Phantomhives. However, he does not exchange his services for "the queen's money," as he seems to dislike Queen Victoria.[2][3] Instead, those who want information from him are expected to amuse him in some way.

Undertaker frequently refers to the deceased as his "guests." It is his hobby to remove organs from his "guests" for research.[4] When living people come to visit him, he frequently asks if they came to see what it feels like to sleep in a coffin.[5]

History

Undertaker as a Shinigami.

Undertaker is a retired Shinigami, and as Grell Sutcliff quotes, a "deserter". As a Shinigami, he wore square, silver-framed glasses, and a black suit including a black trench coat. He did not have the scars across his neck and face, but still had his ear piercings.

In the anime, he is a famous Shinigami, who was ranked management level and has judged souls as famous as Marie Antoinette and Robin Hood. William T. Spears said that even crying children would have offered their souls to him. He is highly respected by William, but he does not return the feelings, calling William "annoying and noisy."[6]

Undertaker was also shown in the Phantomhive Manor along with other nobles and acquaintances of the Earl in Baron Kelvin's flashback, meaning that he was a possible acquaintance of Vincent Phantomhive.

Jack the Ripper

When Ciel, Sebastian Michaelis, Lau, Grell Sutcliff, and Angelina Durless decide they want to see a crime scene of one of Jack the Ripper's killings, they go to the Undertaker to find out not only where they can find it, but if there is any additional information.[7]

The Undertaker appears out of a coffin, saying he has expected Ciel to come. He asks if Ciel wants to see how it feels like to sleep in his custom-made coffin, creeping Angelina, Grell, and Lau out

Undertaker in the coffin

Ciel says that he didn't come to play and the Undertaker interrupts him, claiming that he knows why Ciel is here. The Undertaker tells him that since Ciel went out of his way to visit him, he'll certainly do everything in his power to help. He invites them to sit on the coffins and distributes tea. While munching on a cookie, the Undertaker says that it isn't the first time he handled something similar to the Jack the Ripper case.[8]

Angelina asks what he means by that and the Undertaker replies that there was another case where prostitutes were being killed, even in a similar way. In the beginning, the police weren't so bothered about these cases though the prostitutes all had something in common. However, he needs a compensation before he will reveal that crucial detail. Lau compliments that the Undertaker is good at doing business and asks how much money he wants for this information. The Undertaker vigorously approaches him to tell him that he doesn't want any of the Queen's money. He then turns to Ciel, saying he only has one requirement: show him a "first-rate laugh". If he does so, no matter what he wants to know, the Undertaker will tell him.[9]

Ciel remarks that he's a weirdo. Lau steps up and tells his joke of a tiger but it failed to amuse the Undertaker. Angelina is next to provoke a laugh out of him and inappropriately tells him a vulgar, dirty joke that lasts for an hour. The Undertaker then successfully shuts Lau's and Angelina's mouths and concludes that Ciel is the only one left to make him laugh.[10]

"Show me a first rate laugh"

Ciel is reluctant to and the Undertaker counters that he has helped him out many times in the past so why can't Ciel be nice to him just this once. Abruptly, Sebastian intervenes, signaling that it's his turn and asks for everyone to step outside and forbids anyone to peek in.[11] Sebastian is able to get Undertaker to relay the information through telling him a joke. Although the joke is unknown, it sends Undertaker into wild laughter.

Undertaker reveals that Jack the Ripper's victims are missing their organs, and beyond that, the organs are removed with such precision that only a medical professional could have committed the crimes. The victims are whereby former prostitutes with their uterus specifically removed.[12] Using this information, Sebastian and Ciel are able to later catch the murderer in the act.[13]

Later, Undertaker is seen watching Angelina's funeral from a distance and he approaches Ciel afterward. He calls Ciel kind for giving a nameless prostitute her own grave, but Ciel says he is not, because he had many opportunities to save this woman, but because he placed catching the killer above saving her, she died. He says he even let his own relative, Madame Red, die for the same reason. Undertaker asks if he feels regret, but Ciel says he does not because the killer is gone and Queen Victoria can be at ease. Undertaker says he does not like the Queen because all she does is sightsee from way up high and forces harsh tasks for the Earl to complete.[14]

Ciel replies that it's the karma his family has been burdened with and he inherited with his ring. The Undertaker comments that Ciel is bound to the Queen with the ring acting as a collar connecting he and the Queen with a chain called karma. Ciel tells him that he was the one who decided to the put the collar around his own neck. The Undertaker says that he hopes that the collar will choke him one day. Then, he takes his leave, and says the Earl and his butler can stop by any time.[15]

Noah's Ark Circus

Ciel and Sebastian next approach Undertaker in connection with the Noah's Ark Circus out if any of children have shown up dead. This time, he insults Ciel, who decides to offer the payment of a laugh himself. Ciel supposedly did something very embarrassing.

Afterward, he reveals that there are not any children's corpses, which angers Ciel. However, Undertaker points out that it is important that he knows he does not know anything, as it is indicative that the children might still be alive. As he leaves, Undertaker tells Ciel to keep his soul safe.

Several days later, he is seen watching the burning of Baron Kelvin's manor while playing with charms. On one charm, there is a date and a name engraved, 13 July 1866, Claudia P. He chuckles to himself that he warned Ciel to hold every soul dear, and that Ciel will understand once it is too late. In this moment, Undertaker is shown to not only be looking at the fire but at the cinematic records of the victims.

Phantomhive Manor Murder Case

After Double Charles gives Ciel a letter from the Queen, he tells Sebastian to contact Undertaker.

Undertaker provided a safety coffin for Sebastian’s funeral. When it rings, he informs the others that that means Sebastian is still alive. He tells them to come back any time.

Ship Voyage

Undertaker is a passenger on the cruise liner Campania and is taking a part in the Aurora Society's private meeting. He explains to Ciel Phantomhive that he is there because of his job and stated that the hospital is a regular customer.

Later, Undertaker is seen carrying the device that controlled the dead corpses. While questioned by Ciel how to activate it, he answers that he doesn't know, and he doesn't see how such a device would be of any help.

While the Aleister Chamber, whom is also on the ship, starts talking about his plan to create a 'new empire', irritating Ciel, Sebastian Michaelis, Grell Sutcliff, Ronald Knox and Ryan Stoker, Bizarre Dolls began to infiltrate. He attempts to activate the device only for nothing to occur. Grell Sutcliff gets fed up by the fact that the machine doesn't work and he tries to dispose of the Viscount.

Undertaker stops him, saying the Viscount has amused him greatly, and engages in a battle with Grell, fighting with his sotoba. Grell remarks that his Death Scythe's blade doesn't cut through Undertaker's sotoba. Undertaker takes the advantage and attacks Grell. Grell blocks the sotobas with his scythe, and is sent flying, breaking the glass ceiling. While glass falls around him, Undertaker says that the world without laughter would be sad, pulling his front locks out of the way, revealing his face. Grell falls back to the ground and he, Ronald, and Sebastian realize that Undertaker is a Shinigami because of his revealed eyes. Ryan then runs up to him and asks why he deceived him. It is revealed that the Bizarre Dolls were created by Undertaker and that he was just manipulating Ryan.[16] Ciel asks why he would reanimate corpses and he responds saying that it was because he thought humans were curious. He explains how life and death work and that life ends when the Cinematic Record ends. He asks what would happen if a continuation is added to a competed Cinematic Record. Grell doesn’t believe that he edited a Cinematic Record and Undertaker tells him to look at the Bizarre Doll’s. It appears normal at first, but after the end, it show Undertaker dancing.[17] He explains that he edited the Cinematic Records so that there is no end which makes the body think that it is still alive and move without a soul. He continues that every living thing tries to obtain what it lacks. The Bizarre Dolls lack a soul so they attack the living to try and get one. However, they can never obtain one, and they will never be truly alive or dead. Undertaker than reveals his name for his creations, "The Bizarre Dolls".[18] Ciel calls him perverse, but he just tells Ciel that he is still too young to understand. He then starts caressing a Bizarre Doll and says that they are more beautiful than when they where alive. Ciel replies that it makes him sick, but Undertaker retorts saying that there are other humans who want the Bizarre Dolls and that they make the perfect animal weapon. He says "that eccentric bunch" wanted to test how effective the Bizarre Dolls would be, so they put the same number of humans and Bizarre Dolls on the Campania and were going to see how many of each survive.[19] He adds that he didn't anticipate that the ship would crash into an iceberg, but that saved him from having to sink it himself.[20]

Grell and Ronald state that Undertaker is a deserter.[21] They also say it's against the rules for a Shinigami to interfere with life and death in the human world and Grell adds that the easiest solution would be to capture Undertaker and give him to their bosses. He adds that he can never forgive Undertaker for injuring his face. They then attack Undertaker, but Grell is blocked by him and Ronald is kicked aside by Sebastian, who immediately tries to kick Undertaker, who dodges. Ciel explains that they can’t let the Shinigami take him because they need him to present the truth to the Queen.[22] The Shinigami and Sebastian get ready to fight. Undertaker compares it to a rabbit hunt and asks which rabbit is being hunted. Sebastian, Grell, and Ronald then begin fighting.

During the fight, he states that Shinigami are all heavily nearsighted.[23] Grell then asked him if he's at a disadvantage himself and successfully cuts Undertaker's sotoba, much to his surprise as he couldn't do that at first. He took his chance and kicked Grell. He then jumped to Ronald. Although Ronald dodged his attack, his glasses were knocked off his face, causing his eyesight to go blurry. Undertaker kicks Ronald's face and stated that it's 'still green' if a Shinigami still relies on their glasses.[24] As Grell throws Ronald's glasses back at Ronald, Sebastian's tableware clings to Ronald's glasses, preventing Ronald from catching his glasses. Sebastian then aimed for Undertaker, but he dodged it and asked whether Sebastian thinks that he'll be able to take him down with tableware. Sebastian states that it may not be as good as a death scythe, but his tableware has top-grade sharpness.[25] Undertaker teases the three of them about how they said that they're going to hunt him down but still couldn't do so. Ronald, who got back his glasses, became annoyed by that and Grell states that they don't have much time. Ronald and Grell then decided to go after Undertaker head on, but were unable to cut the Undertaker's sotoba and states that there should be nothing a death scythe can't cut. Undertaker asks them how strange the phrase is. He told them that there is one thing a death scythe can't cut. He then slashed Grell and Ronald with something, which was later revealed to be his death scythe. He states that he was with it for such a long time that he couldn't part with it and went through some trouble to take it with him after he quit being a Shinigami. Undertaker asked them how it was that he hunt them down instead of him being like a pitiful rabbit in a hunting game. He winds up destroying one of the pillars. Sebastian then threw tables at him. Although the Undertaker was able to cut them easily, he realized he was tricked by Sebastian as he states that he just want to get within the wide reach of the scythe. Undertaker thought it was interesting and said that he will also do something interesting, which is to take Ciel as his hostage, shocking both Ciel and Sebastian. He said to Ciel that he'd always wanted to put him into one of his specially made coffins.[26] As Sebastian attempted to attack Undertaker, he threw Ciel into the air away from Sebastian.

Before Sebastian could reach Ciel, he was stabbed by Undertaker's death scythe. He states that a human life is weak and fragile, but it is quite hard to drag out. He also mentions how he had always been wondering why a vicious beast like Sebastian would dress up and play butler. He then watches Sebastian's Cinematic Records.

When the Cinematic Record is done, he follows Sebastian, who had just caught Ciel. He notes that Sebastian is the source of Ciel's misery and decides to kill him. But before he can, the Campania begins to sink and tilt heavily.[27] Grell begins fighting him, and he remembers that Grell was Madame Red's butler. Water begins flooding in and Undertaker decides it's time for him to leave. Sebastian and Grell then attack him simultaneously. He dodges both, but drops his chain of lockets, which Ciel grabs. He decides to leave his "treasure" with Ciel and tells him to keep it safe. He then says farewell and slices the ship.[28]

Shard of Hope

He arrives at the Ice Top Market, part of the Frost Fair, due to the high number of fatalities from frostbite. Thinking he might have additional information on the thief of the ring who died nearby, Fred Aberline approaches him, closely followed by Ciel, Sebastian, and Lau. Ciel initially expects that Sebastian will have to provide the usual fee, but much to their surprise, Undertaker finds Aberline's natural personality to be so amusing that he does not request additional payment.

Upon being asked, he leads them to an ice sculpture where the Shard of Hope has been incorporated, and then takes his leave.

Book of Doomsday

Undertaker helps Ciel, Sebastian, and Grell enter the convent.

Initially, he finds Grell's "corpse" in a recent shipment of the dead, and insults his drabness, prompting Grell to attack him. Shortly thereafter, he is approached by Ciel and Sebastian, who learned from Ash that the cult had received a large shipment of coffins, and they expected that Undertaker may know something. He initially tries to get his normal payment, but upon receiving a glare from Grell, he agrees to help them for free. He does this by aiding Ciel, Grell, and Sebastian in entering the convent by delivering a coffin where they were hiding in.

Later, he is seen in the Shinigami Library and aids in stopping Angela's rampage, upon Ciel's request. He uses a Death Bookmark to stop the story Angela is writing and adds Sebastian, Grell, and William into a fight with her. However, due to the limitations of the pen and bookmark, he cannot do much more than that.

Conspiracy and Revenge

When Ciel heads toward a burning London in a boat, he finds him among the ship's cargo. He shares his bone-shaped biscuits and provides limited information on the current goings-on. When prompted, he tells Ciel that he is on the soul collection lists and he is about to die. However, before Ciel can get more information, he is briefly distracted and Undertaker leaves mysteriously.

Later, during Sebastian's fight with Ash and Angela, he helps reap the souls that are attacking Sebastian.

Character Outline

Pluto's demon hound form.

In his human form Pluto has shoulder-length gray/silver hair, red eyes, and fangs. His pupils are also slitted and he has black toenails. He is often shown nude in his human form, as he changes back and forth from his demon hound form to his human form frequently. Later, he is shown wearing a suit more frequently.[1]

When in his demon hound form he becomes a monstrous dog, easily towering over Sebastian Michaelis and even tall humans. He has white fur, red pupils, black sclera and long, black nails.

He does not speak, even in his human form, and simply makes dog-like sounds, such as whining noises, howling and barking. Even when in his human form, he retains dog-like characteristics, such as continuing to run around on all fours and using his nose to find things. He can turn into his human form upon will or more unintentionally, such as when excited.[2]

Houndsworth

When the Phantomhive household goes to the village of Houndsworth, they initially believe the legend of the demon hound to be a farce created by Henry Barrymore, but when he is dragged from the cell where he was being kept and is found dead, they investigate further.

Finnian, Baldroy, Mey-Rin, and Tanaka initially discover a strange, nude man, and before they can investigate him further, they are distracted by the townspeople. When they turn around, they see a large devil dog, but decide to follow him further when they notice he is carrying part of Angela's clothing. However, it turns out that he was just her pet, but had killed Henry because of his abuse of the devil dog legend. Angela asks if they will take him in so he can behave better, and Ciel Phantomhive agrees, knowing how much Sebastian despises dogs.

Shard of Hope

He aids Ciel, Grell Sutcliff, and Sebastian in finding Elizabeth Midford by unsealing the door to the tower she is being held in. After their fight with Drossel Keinz he is seen calmly laying at Drossel's master's feet, much to Ciel's and Sebastian's surprise. It is later shown that the reason for this is because the puppet manipulating Drossel was controlled by Angela.

Conspiracy and Revenge

Pluto is seen when Mey-Rin, Baldroy, and Finnian recall their pasts and how they were recruited. He is seen helping Finnian with his gardenwork, though he creates more problems by burning all the trees. Later, he uses his fire breath to defend Phantomhive Manor.

Pluto uses his ability to breathe fire.

When Ash goes on the rampage, he uses Pluto's demon hound abilities to set most of London on fire. As he goes out of control and cannot be stopped with mere anesthetic, Ciel orders his servants to kill Pluto. Mey-Rin, Finnian, and Baldroy sadly agree, and using their various skills, are able to take him out, injuring themselves in the process.

In the end Sebastian promises Ciel that he would "gather Pluto's bones" later, indicating that Pluto had been killed.
